Chances are if you are reading this you bought a used Series One Land Rover Discovery and have spent countless hours reading your owner’s manual, searching the web for answers, and trying every combination of transmission in drive, transmission in neutral, going over 5 M.P.H. going under 5 M.P.H., emergency brake on, etc. and you have finally come to the conclusion that your differential lock is thoroughly stuck. This page will hopefully provide you with guidance into fixing this common problem on Land Rover Discoveries.

For the first time anywhere, we will be bringing you a comprehensive guide to OME shock information including compressed and extended lengths, as well as end configurations. The listing in color indicate standard LR coil sprung sizes.

Bilstein shocks are unique in that they market two completely seperate lines of shocks.  The first is their OEM style shocks.  These are offered as direct replacements for stock shocks with the proper ends.  Bilstein takes the time to match these shocks to EACH application they sell them for offering what is in their estimation the correct shock with the correct valving for each application.

Although the Rancho Shock Guide is available directly from Rancho, and most of the figures are available from other sources, I had yet to see a comprehensive guide to their shocks so that will be done here.  I do NOT have valving information (yet) so you will have to pick the size that best suits your needs and go from there.

Shock Specifications

Choosing new shocks for your truck is one of the most daunting challenges out there.  Everyone wants to keep their truck as comfortable as possible, but wants control of that wallowy land rover ride.  Your springs and your shocks play a major role in ride quality.  We talked about springs in another article so now we will look at shocks.

Adding new springs to your Land Rover generally happens at one of two times.  Either when your original springs have given their best service and your truck starts to sag, or when you decided to get serious about off-roading and you want some larger tires on your truck.  In both instances, the questions are similar.  What do I already have, what is available to me, how will it ride, how tall will it make my truck, what tires can I fit when I add these new springs.  This page will address each of these issues in turn.

Choosing the proper brake fluid for your Land Rover falls into one of two categories.  You can do what the manual tells you and only use Castrol, or you can learn about brake fluids and choose what best fits your needs.
