Replacing the Fuel Filter

Replacing the fuel filter on the Range Rover, Disco or D90 is a simple affair, requiring only a few tools and a little patience.  It will smooth delivery of fuel to the engine, and keep contaminants from getting to the injectors.  If you regularly buy fuel from suspect operators, I’d suggest changing frequently, and since they are cheap, you might do well to keep a spare.

Packing Wheel Bearings

This article will discuss how to pack wheel bearings (or any other bearings).  While this is a simple procedure, it is VERY important to do it at regular intervals especially if you wade through deep water often.  The pressure of the water will let it get into hubs (if you don’t have the double lip seals).

You'll need:

Bearing or EP (Exteme Pressure) Grease
LOTS of paper towels
A good hand cleaner (Lava is great)

Procedure

Replace T-Case Output Shaft bearings

The front output shaft of the Borg Warner and LT230 Transfer Cases are prone to give trouble after years of hard use.  Usually, the problem is worn bearings. The symptoms are a “clunk” from directly under the driver seat, especially when going from drive to overrun and back.  Replacing the bearing is not too difficult a task and will be outlined here.

Remove/Replace CV Joints 91 RR

The CV joints on the Land Rover are made to last a long time.. given highway use.  The cages are made of VERY hard steel, and when subjected to potholes and off-roading, they often break.  Replacement is not very difficult but can be expensive.  Genuine units are easily available, but some aftermarket units (like the one from Great Basin Rovers) are made of a slightly softer metal that offers better performance for vehicles used off the road.

Replacing/ Repacking Wheel Bearings

This article will discuss the tools, and procedures necessary to replace wheel bearings on a coil sprung Land Rover (1991 Range Rover but other models are similar).

Replacing/Upgrading Exhaust

Replacing or upgrading the exhaust in a Land Rover is something you will want or need to do if you keep your truck for more than a few years.  The main problem is that the cost of a genuine Land Rover exhaust is astronomical.  In this article, we will examine the parts of the exhaust system, and how you can save money when you want to replace pieces of it or the whole.

System Description

Front Recovery Point in a D90

The addition of recovery points to your vehicle is probably the single most important addition you can make if you want to take your Land Rover off the beaten path.  Sooner or later, you WILL get stuck.  When you do, you will want to get UNstuck.  Most times this requires assistance from another truck.  How will they pull you free?  What will they attach to on your vehicle? On the road you could simply wrap a strap around the axle, but if that were possible off-road, you probably wouldn’t be stuck!  Enter the recovery points.

How To Aim Headlamps and Auxiliary Lamps

Although an optical beamsetter is the most accurate way to aim lamps, these are not very common in North America. Foglamps, driving lamps, and visually-aimable headlamps do not require a mechanical aimer or other machine in order to achieve correct visual aim. All ECE (E-code) headlamps are visually aimable, and many newer US (DOT) headlamps can be accurately aimed visually. First, you must determine if your headlamps can accurately be aimed visually. If you have ECE (E-code, European-spec) headlamps, you can aim them visually.

E-Code Headlamp Install

E-Code headlamps are probably the most intelligent way to improve the headlights on your modern Land Rover.  The original sealed beams that meet US DOT specifications are pretty poor.  European Specification halogen headlamps are not only brighter, but put more light where it’s needed.  For under $100 you can have a pair of headlamps that will actually let you  see where you are going!
