How to Identify your Range Rover

The Range Rover was first introduced in 1970 and has had many modifications over the years . It is available in 3 & 5 Door versions with various V8 engines and Trim types . Later vehicles were fitted with a VM Turbo Diesel engine that was not designed by Land Rover Ltd . The new shape Range Rover introduced in 1995 is fitted with V8 petrol engines and the Tdi diesel engine that first fitted to the Discovery and is now found in the full Land Rover range of vehicles . It is very important that chassis and component identifiaction numbers are given when ordering parts for Range Rovers as the are many variations available .

Engine Number

The V8 Engine Number is stamped on the engine block on the left hand side beetween the middle two spark plugs . The engine compression ratio is also stamped here.

Vehicle Identification Plate

The Vehicle Identification Plate which has the VIN (Chassis) Number stamped on it is located on the front body panel underneath the bonnet . Other vehicle information is also located here.

Gearbox Identification Number (Early Gearbox )

The Gearbox Identification Number for early 4 speed manual gearbox's is stamped on the front top of the gearbox next to the reversing light switch just below the gearstick housing ( Illustrated below ) . Later gearbox's have it stamped on the lower rear face of the Transfer box.
