Vehicle Identification Plate
- 90 : This is a coil sprung Short Wheel Base 1984 onwards - 92.5" wheel base (unusual in LR naming terms as most models were named after their wheel base)
- 110 : This is a coil sprung Long Wheel Base 1983 onwards - 110" wheel base
- 130 : This is a coil sprung super Long Wheel Base - 130" wheel base
- Defender : This was a name change for the Land Rover with the introduction of the Tdi diesel unit .This is either a 90 - 110 or 130 fitted with a 200 or 300 Tdi engine and V8 made after 199-.
These vehicles can be identified at a glance as they all have rubber eyebrows fitted to the wheel arches and have coil spring suspension instead of the older leaf spring type .The first model to appear was the 110 in 1983 and then was closely followed by the 90 in 1984.The Difference between the 90 and the 110 is the vehicles length and wheel base latest model is called the Defender and appeared in 1991 .The 90 & 110 vehicles were fitted with 2.3 Petrol , 2.5 Diesel ,2.5 Turbo Diesel and V8 Petrol .The Defender model is very similar to the earlier 90 & 110 but was fitted with a new type of engine called a Tdi .These come in two versions the earlier 200 series and the later 300 series .Land Rover's made after the Tdi was introduced ,but fitted with V8 and 4cyl petrol engines are also called Defenders . There are Short wheel base and Long wheel base versions of the Defender . All these models are available as Truck Cab pick up , Full Hard Top 3 Door , 3 & 5 Door Station Wagon ( Also called a Safari ) which is fitted with rear seats and sliding side windows . There are also several other less common variants such as 127 and Hi capacity models.
