Front Recovery Point in a D90

The addition of recovery points to your vehicle is probably the single most important addition you can make if you want to take your Land Rover off the beaten path.  Sooner or later, you WILL get stuck.  When you do, you will want to get UNstuck.  Most times this requires assistance from another truck.  How will they pull you free?  What will they attach to on your vehicle? On the road you could simply wrap a strap around the axle, but if that were possible off-road, you probably wouldn’t be stuck!  Enter the recovery points.

Recovery points are simple pieces of strong metal attached to your frame/chassis or other unbreakable portion of your car.  They can be called “JATE” rings, or “lifting rings” in Land Rover parlance.    You can get the genuine article from the dealer or from Rovers North.  The Land Rover part number is RRC-3237 and the Rovers North part number is RNK-0211.

Installtion is straightforward.  The loops fit in the front chassis horns where the bumper mounts.  You remove the bolts (one at a time) that hold the bumper on, hammer on the lifting ring to open it up a bit, and then bolt it into place.  Then repeat for the other side.  These same pieces can also be fitted to the rear of the frame behind the axles.  Alternately, you can fit a specially made ring that fits into the receiver hitch.  These are avaiable from  Tow Hitch from Masterpull most major winch manufacturers, and from specialist vendors like recoverygear and masterpull (tow hitch). You must remember that if you DO use the hitch based recovery point, that you cannot exceed the rated pull of the hitch when you are trying to pull your car free from whatever you are stuck in.  If you are up to your axles in muck, you may exceed the rated pull of the hitch trying to pull yourself free.
