E-Code headlamps are probably the most intelligent way to improve the headlights on your modern Land Rover. The original sealed beams that meet US DOT specifications are pretty poor. European Specification halogen headlamps are not only brighter, but put more light where it’s needed. For under $100 you can have a pair of headlamps that will actually let you see where you are going! Please be forewarned, these lamps are not “legal” for use on US roads. Many people use them anyway because the trade off in safety in being able to see the road clearly outweighs the pitfalls of dim, poorly focused DOT legal lights.
Materials:
- 1 pair E-Code headlamps
- 1 Phillips screwdriver
- 1 small flat bladed screwdriver
- 1 large flat bladed screwdriver
- 1 rubber mallet or hammer.
Procedure:
The installation is really quite straightforward. Pop the bonnet (hood) and take off front grill. This is accomplished by loosening the small tabs at the top of the grill. Use your large flat bladed screwdriver to lift the metal tabs and release the grill.Next, you will need to remove the small screws holding in the light. There are 3 phillips-headed screws holding the light in (noted as “A”). Notice there are 2 other screws (noted as “B”) that take a flat bladed screwdriver. These adjust the aim of the lights and we will deal with them later. Once you have the lights removed, simply unplug the 3 prong connector on the back of each light. You will probably have to install the new bulb in the back of the reflector. Take care not to touch the bulb with your fingers. The oil from your finger can cause hotspots on the bulb, making it fail pre-maturely. Once you have the bulb in place, plug in the new lamp. Make sure you have them right side up, there is writing on the front of the lamp so you can see which is the right way.Screw the lamp reflector back in place just like it came out.
Aiming:
There is a method to the madness of aiming your new lights. Unlike DOT headlamps, the europeans actually put some thought into what they were doing. Here are two sites that teach you how to do it....Upgrading your lighting system
